Seneca Land District
"Seneca Land" is one of seventeen districts of the Barbershop Harmony Society, formally known as the "Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc.", or more commonly referred to as "S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., Inc.". The Society started in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1938. O.C. Cash and Rupert Hall, met by chance at the Hotel Muehlebach, found two other singers to comprise a quartet, and the rest as they say, is history.
Seneca Land District is composed of 34 Chapters and approximately 60 registered quartets that perform in our District as well as throughout the country and also, around the world.
Although one of the smallest Districts in the Society, Seneca Land District has contributed an International Champion Quartet, "The Buffalo Bills", and five Society Presidents; Phil Embury, S. Wayne Foor, James Steedman, Plummer R. Collins, and Rob Hopkins.

A "Salute" to the "Buffalo Bills" Quartet - 1950 BHS Gold Medalist
"One of the best-loved musicals, Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man,” opened on Broadway on December 19, 1957. The stage production and this subsequent 1962 film featured one of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s most memorable quartets, the 'Buffalo Bills', and thrust barbershop harmony into a broad spectrum of public light.
The original founding members in 1947 were Vern Reed, Bill Spangenberg, Hershel Smith (who was replaced by Dick Grapes in 1950) and Al Shea. The quartet won the Barbershop Harmony Society Gold Medal in 1950 with what was then the largest point accumulation in Society history. The 'Buffalo Bills' were the face of barbershop for years, starring in 728 concerts, 216 television shows, 1,510 Broadway appearances, 626 conventions, 675 radio shows, 672 night club and hotel appearances, 137 state fair performances, 15 record albums and a major motion picture. They were regulars on the Arthur Godfrey radio show and traveled to military bases around the world."
